Because it's Father's Day this Sunday, I wanted to write about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. How does that make sense? Well, the father-son theme between Harry and James Potter in the series, of course, but also - my dad is not your typical dad. He doesn't
wear ties, he doesn't play golf, and he doesn't do barbecues. He doesn't even live in this country, so we actually don't celebrate Father's Day in June; nonetheless, I wanted to give a shout out* and let him know that I'm thinking about him. Several years back, when all three of his kids had their noses buried in this international hotcake of a book series, he wanted to see what all the hype was about and give it a try himself. So he borrows my Volume 1 and pencils in definitions for every other word in the margins, even the magical ones. "I'm trying to learn English," he says, even though his English, written and spoken, is perfectly fine. He never made it to the second or third or seventh, but I'll always have those faint pencil marks of underlines and arrows and definitions in the Sorcerer's Stone to look at and smile upon when I miss him. Happy Father's Day, ba!*P.S. Dad: a "shout out" can mean "hello" or "hey" or giving a mention. Urban Dictionary defines it as "To acknowledge someone. To make one's presence known."
All smiles,
Claire
