FUNNY TEETH

Finally, a funny book! I've been reading some serious books lately ("Sula", "American Prometheus")... that are supposed to tackle some Serious Issues, and I've needed a break. But when I read books like "White Teeth" (Zadie Smith-- which I presume is pronounced just like 'Sadie' since that is her real name. Thanks, Wikipedia!), which does have some really touching moments and some Serious Issues lurking behind its fresh, funny tones, it makes me wonder why I take literature--fiction in particular--so seriously sometimes.

It also makes me question what I have spent the last four years doing! I've trudged through Milton, Chaucer, Faulkner, Naipaul, etc etc... and now what? Countless essays later, I wonder if I've sucked all the fun out of reading for myself. Sometimes defining tropes, explicating internal rhyme schemes, and counting meters are just no good for feeling out the soul of a book, or even just appreciating it.

And here are my funny teeth*:

currently listening to:

so tired from procrastinating (one final left!!), tiffany

* I happen to think it's funny seeing different body fragments individually. But then you put them all together and it's a bit anti-climatic. Like you know, every year Time Magazine or whoever comes out with the Most Beautiful Woman In The World Composites and it's just disappointing because instead of a gorgeous woman you always get a strange looking bird with Angelina Jolie's mouth. Always.
