BOOKS SO BIG YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THEM

Founded in Germany in 1980, Taschen is an art book publisher that has roots in comic book publishing that has since expanded into an empire of big, dramatic books showcasing art from the ordinary to the subversive. Their library is categorized by these genres: Sex, Art, Architecture, Photography, Design, and New Titles.

There are currently six stores, two of which I've had the chance to visit - one not-so-impressive one at the Farmers Market, and recently the one in Beverly Hills which apparently has been there since 2003? Could've fooled me because the interior space was so modern and ambient that you could mistaken it for a hip (though narrow) lounge at night, designed by Philippe Starck of course (what isn't)? I don't think I've ever encountered a publisher that was better branded or more proud of it. They scream COOL, unaffectedly and unselfconsciously so. I could never imagine buying a book though, not to mention having the space for one, that's bigger than the size of your torso.

Locations: Berlin, Tokyo, Paris, New York City and Los Angeles.
