TRUE STORIES

Some true stories:

The summer I turned eleven was also the first summer I ventured into young adult section and found Memoirs of a Geisha. There was a translator's note about how this book was conceived and I was so convinced that this was a TRUE STORY that had been translated into English. I didn't bother looking at the author's name. The next day I went back to the library, and asked for a book about a geisha written by a Japanese author since I had no idea where I had found it. The librarian asked if it was a novel by one Arthur Golden. No, I said. That's not a Japanese woman, definitely not. Of course, Golden was the one who wrote Memoirs, and I found out later when I finally conceded to the librarian's suggestions.

A couple months later, I borrowed The Princess Bride from one of my friends. I also thought the author WAS the narrator, and was really being told the story of the Princess Bridge by his grandpa. Argh! So gullible!

I've started American Prometheus, which according to the cover blurb is about "The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer." It's painting a really compelling picture of Oppie's life so far and the six hundred plus pages don't even seem daunting right now, it's that good.

And Claire, I wish I was in New York with you! Tu me manques! Seeing as my Sunday morning is now completely free, I wish I could transport myself Star Trek style and walk through Central Park with you.
