So, last week I thought it would be really thoughtful of me to vacuum my apartment's dining room. Unfortunately, I also decided it would be a really great idea to leave my iPod near the edge of the table, with the earphones dangling onto the carpet. I really did not think my vacuum cleaner was that powerful, or that it would suck up my earphones and destroy them. I sort of freaked out because I use my iPod every day, and even though it can be considered bad running form, I use it to get through longer runs. It was the weekend of a scheduled long run, and I was really sad that I would have to get through it without music and I decided the next best thing would be a trashy read on the Kindle on the treadmill.
Note: Amazon makes it infinitely difficult to navigate its site to find the free eBooks! There are quite a few sites that compile free eBooks in a variety of forms, but I actually find it complicated to figure it out the different file types I want for my Kindle. I haven't played around with it that much yet. So I downloaded one of the first things I saw: "Sweet Baklava" by Debby Mayne.
Holy shit. This book is BAD. And by bad, I mean so so bad. I am getting blue balled by a Christian romance novel. This sucks. And yet I can't stop because this is like a soap opera with really attractive people. Can I predict what happens? Let me tell you what's going on, how far I've gotten, and whether I can envision an upcoming scene.
The two protagonists are Paula Andrews, candle & soap shop owner, and Nick Papadopoulos, current Air Force officer who has come back to his hometown in Florida, for a vacation from active duty. Nick and Paula used to date in high school. Paula has family issues, Nick has too much family. He is Greek, and like most characters in ethnic families in books, finds his family both ridiculous and adorable and really well fed and kept by their women. I'm at that pivotal point where a family member from Paula's past has come back into her life (her mom!) and has started stirring shit up. Nick feels protective. And then I fell asleep at 4 am. This is my conjecture:
Paula lends her mom money. Mom disappears but says SOMETHING that makes Paula doubt herself, and not want to end up like her moms. She confides in Nick. Nick immediately comes to her rescue by comforting her and pushing her to stand up for herself. Paula confronts mom, mom reacts badly and blames Nick. Paula has a breakdown, and goes to church a lot, all while avoiding Nick, and spending lots of time at her candle/soap business. Nick goes to confront her and tells her, look, I have like twenty four hours before I go back to the Air Force. I need to know whether you are going to be my future baby mama. Or else I AM PEACE-ING OUT. Paula goes, I need more time, and probably refuses to cry in front of him but when he is gone she listens to a lot of Gram Parsons. Then, at the very very last minute, she has a make-up sesh with her moms, and has a sudden change of heart and races, and I mean RACES, to Nick's place, but he is already gone! But this would defeat the purpose of the novel, as he just came back from the Air Force, so she manages to catch him as he is boarding his plane or whatever transportation device masculine, muscle-y southern men take to get out of there. They kiss! Rejoice! They probably go to church to celebrate.
I'll report back to see if I'm right.
By the way, in case you were wondering what earphones I am using now. I've had these for the past few years; whenever a pair dies I just get another color. I've had it in pink, green, and blue. They're only $8 on Amazon! I feel like Amazon knows entirely way too much about me.
