EXPLAINING AMERICA

I was at Housing Works this weekend (where else?) and I saw Bjork! She was wearing crazy clothes and she was tiny. Like tiny dancer in the dark.

Anyway, I picked up "As I Lay Dying" (Faulkner) and "An Explanation of America" (poetry by former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky). I started Pinsky on the subway today, and it's very much a kaledioscope of nuances. It's appropriate considering I've been feeling, more than usual lately, like a very small speck.

I also wanted to link to an article in Forbes, "Indian Americans: The New Model Minority" and a response article, "Nobody's Minority." The article in Forbes is misguided in the worst way and the response, while not the best written or most thorough, brings up some crucial points: that 'model minority' isn't a compliment. It's racist. Explain that America.

Bullshit, Brooklyn. Clean up.

While you are at that, why don't you explain how come shattered glass has been left unattended to on the sidewalk for at least two weeks now, right across the street from a public elementary school! Oh my God, New York! Look. I don't live in a nice area of town, I realize that. I live far from scrawny hipster kids. I live where people raise families and where most people probably have two or three jobs just to make ends meet. And that's a neighborhood we should take pride in and keep clean.
