NEVER LET ME GO
"Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro is so heartbreaking. I can't give away too many details of the plot because that's what makes this novel so compelling to read. Ishiguro plants these hazy ideas in your mind early on, and you sort of want them to stay hazy and far away because you know once they are cemented and fact, you are going to start crying. It's one of those dystopia novels, like Atwood's "Oryx and Crake" or "The Handmaid's Tale," only Atwood lacks the subtlety and craft. (Man, I realized I have this deep grudge against Atwood for writing "Oryx and Crake.") "Never Let Me Go" is horrific in the sense in that the idea of people having souls is no longer an assumption - it needs to be proven, and even when "proven" it seems that not all souls are created equal, and not all people are, in fact, considered people.
