THE FOURTH WAY

I met author William Patrick Patterson last night when he came to dine at the restaurant where I work. Super nice, and now he's sending me his newest book, "Spiritual Survival in a Radically Changing World-Time." He's part of this Fourth Way movement that basically tries to develop higher consciousness for people (they believe we are born "asleep" and die "asleep" and only imagine we have consciousness). I'll let you know how it goes, but wow, if that's the case, I've had a mighty good R.E.M. cycle.

Patterson is also speaking at Quest Books in NYC today at 3:00
p.m.

I'm trying to start reading "Inventing the Abbots" by Sue Miller but every time I read the back about how this collection of short stories is about "treacherously shifting ground of erotic and family relationships," I think of Joyce Carol Oates. Not that that is bad or anything, as I rather admire her, but I'm not sure depressed is what I want to be in the winter time. I used to have Bharati Mukherjee as a creative writing professor at UC Berkeley, and she and Oates are friends and the Mukhster used to say that Oates would write everywhere! In the car, her husband would drive and she would sit in the back with her laptop and just write, write, write. No wonder she is so prolific.

currently listening to:
The Sound of Sinners
The Clash

woo, holiday party at work! yes!
