THE BOX GARDEN

These trees used to be my personal box garden. The box extended from the Clark Kerr dorm to the fire trails in Berkeley, California. :)

I think we all have relationships like this:

As always there is a kind of ritual to our dialogue, for of course I know that I have written to Judith about Eugene and she knows it too... I can even recall some of the phrases I used in my letters to her. She has not suddenly forgotten, not Judith. It is only that she and I see each other so rarely that we are afraid we might misjudge the permitted area of intimacy. It is necessary to prepare the ground a little before we can speak... We talk in careful, mutually drawn circles.

-- Carol Shields, "The Box Garden"

I love Carol Shields so much. Her writing style, how she represents the mundane on paper, everything. Yes, read "The Box Garden"! As if you even have to ask. It always amazes me how Shields has the ability to develop characters so fully in such a short time.
