HEADLINES IN HARD TIMES

Many depressing headlines lately about the publishing industry:

RECESSION FORCES CUTBACKS BY RANDOM HOUSE AND SIMON & SCHUSTER 12.3 - "In an economic bind, book publishers cut back."

PUBLISHING INDUSTRY FACING RECORD LAYOFFS
- 12.3 "Publisher announce staff cuts."

MORE PUBLISHING INDUSTRY LAYOFFS 12.10 - "Just last week there were layoffs at several companies. And today there is news of more layoffs in the industry. This time it is Chronicle Books."

LAYOFFS AND RESTRUCTURING AT MACMILLAN 12.15 - "The drumbeat from the publishing industry continued..."

PUBLISHING SHAKE-UPS 12.17 - "Two weeks after Random House unveiled a sweeping restructuring, the newly consolidated Random House Publishing Group division appointed Susan Kamil, editorial director of Dial Press, as editor in chief of the Random House imprint."

LAYOFFS BEGIN TO AFFECT THE UNIVERSITY-PRESS WORLD 12.19 - "Are university presses next? In what may — or may not — be a sign of things to come, one of the larger university presses, SUNY Press, has laid off five employees..."

How will I ever find a job after graduation. I'm scaared. And it's cold.

P.S. Books make an EXCELLENT present for the holidays, by the way. I repeat, EXCELLENT. Buy books! Be merry! Drink spiked eggnog!
