MORE KAFKA
I had forgotten Claire had posted on "Kafka on the Shore" but hey -- two degrees of separation --I'm reading a short story collection by Kafka right now. And I love it. It's so dark, I had forgotten that about Kafka. (Mostly all I remember that a certain Gregor Samsa ends up as a very large bug.) It's appropriate too: the weather in Berkeley has been moody and windy; I'm always sleepy.
I once again have proper internet connection thanks to someone else's network, so yay! Thank you Amanda's Network.
I did finish "Rebecca" by du Maurier and liked it. The plot felt played out -- new wife suspects husband is still in love with ex/former/very dead wife -- but I guess I could say evil stepmothers are played out too. It was good, but I just couldn't believe that du Maurier also wrote "The Birds"! How random.
Finally read one of Claire's favs, "A Moveable Feast" by Hemmingway. I now adore the man as a person because he basically intensely dislikes Gertude Stein although is quite nice about his dislike, and loves F. Scott Fitzgerald (who stole my heart!). It's funny, the memoir almost felt like an expose of all of Hemmingway's famous friends as opposed to the experience to living in Paris itself, but I guess only Paris would have drawn all these people together. I wish I had had this book when I was in Paris last summer. How lovely that would have been.
