WHEN YOU ARE ENGULFED IN FLAMES

Quick post before dashing out to some celeb MTV gifting suite luncheon blah blah with my co-worker and the guy he's dating. Not boyfriend, "dating." He's very particular about that.

I have a friend who's a serial BFF-er. Meaning, she makes these best friends for 4-8 months, spends all her time with him/her, brings him/her everywhere she goes, basically attached to the hip. They start dressing alike, liking the same things, even LOOKING alike. We'll see the most recent BFF for several outings, will befriend them too, welcome them to the group, but eventually have to start all over again when the next season rolls around. Kind of like wardrobes.

So we meet this new BFF, and she's nice, and she's interesting, but something's a little off. This new girl, I figure out, has absolutely ZERO sense of humor. Completely and utterly zippo. You make a joke and she'll just stare at you, blank eyed, creating an awkward one-sided okay-maybe-we-should-stop-laughing kind of moment. Or she'll say "Oh my gosh that's HILARIOUS." Completely expressionless.

Maybe it's that she takes herself too seriously. Maybe she was just born without the funny gene, which is rather unfortunate. Therefore, I would recommend her David Sedaris' latest, which gets released this coming Tuesday June 3rd. It's called When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and if it's anything like his previous books, you'll laugh until your ribs hurt - even if your humor's a little off, or for that matter, nonexistent. Here's Sedaris - to the rescue!
