FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Some books grow on me. I have to work at it, and I think some authors do that deliberately. Steinbeck starts off East of Eden slowly, with vivid and painstakingly detailed descriptions that are only fully meaningful after you've finished the entire beautiful novel.

But Sula has taken my heart from the beginning! I'm only halfway through right now, but it's incredible. I can tell this is one of THE BOOKS that is going to change my life. Toni Morrison will do that to you.

"'Hell ain't things lasting forever. Hell is change.' Not only did men leave and children grow up and die, but even the misery didn't last. One day she wouldn't even have that. This very grief that had twisted her into a curve on the floor and flayed her would be gone. She would lose that too." -- Sula
