To promote their newest miniseries John Adams, based on David McCullough's highly acclaimed biography of our second president, featuring Paul Giammati (finally, a decent starring role!) and Laura Linney, HBO's teamed up with USPS to launch something called the "Power of the Letter" to honor the almost-famished tradition of the handwritten letter. Much of what we know about John Adam's story is elucidated through his written correspondences with wife Abigail and with colleagues such as Thomas Jefferson and other political influencers of the time. By visiting this site, anyone can choose from a set of designed notecards and personalize it by selecting a layout and uploading a photo of your own. They'll then send you your card with two-way postage, which will allow you to handwrite to a friend and send it for free. This offer will go on through March 31st or until supplies last.
The fact that "Power of the Letter" is linked to an entertainment marketing effort sort of dilutes the romance of it all; however, I do applaud their out-of-the-box thinking and do believe strongly in keeping the written letter form alive. At least here's an effort to keep the human skill of handwriting from becoming obsolete like I'm afraid map-reading will. Remember pen-pals, and actual chain letters through snail mail? I have a "Power of the Letter" card coming already in the mail. Fun!
