INTRODUCING ENDER

I love science-fiction and fantasy books! I think that these types of books are often done best for children, though, because kids will believe anything (in a good way). I think that's when we trust authors the most--and I think that children's authors are often the most sensitive writers, too. They know they have an enormous responsibility.

Anyway, when I was fourteen, I discovered Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game and it basically changed my life. Sci-fi and fantasy often are ignored because they're poorly written, I think; accused of being more idea books than anything else. Most of the times, I feel that sci-fi writers should just hire ghost writers and the world would be a better place. Perhaps Frank Herbert should have done this with the Dune series. I have a feeling it would have made the reading experience much more pleasant. Regardless, I am just writing to let you know I named my dog Ender after Card's book (and subsequent series). I am planning to name my next dog Android after Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The novel was the basis for Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford. I actually kind of hate the movie--I'll post the email I wrote to one of my professors about the movie. But Android is so cute. Here is my dog Ender:
